rewards

Resident rewards

Once introduced in an area, participating residents can accrue Local Green Points in relation to them undertaking measurable actions that include (but are no limited to):

  • Recycling
  • Reducing waste
  • Use of public transport
  • Home energy savings
  • Reduction in carbon
  • Community volunteering

Green Points can then be redeemed in ways relevant to the demographics of the individual or community and include (but are not limited to):

  • Discount or full payment for eco-products and services
  • Free or discounted access to council owned health facilities
  • Discounts or payments for other accredited goods and services

Community Rewards

Where it is not possible to identify and measure specific household actions (such as in multi-occupancy dwellings), entire communities can be rewarded for their collective actions.

Here, instead of personal reward redemption, rewards can be manifested into contributions to community development funds and activities.

However, there remains the option for Local Authorities to reward households within community areas on an average contribution basis instead of or as well as a wider community rewards.

Measurement and monitoring for waste and recycling

In order to reward for recycling and waste minimisation, it is necessary to identify which household has put out what container as well as the weight of the container’s contents. There are a number of means with which we will achieve this:

  • RFID Chip and on-vehicle weighing
  • Bespoke Stickers
  • Bar code tags

Non-waste measurement
The ultimate objective of Local Green Points is to stimulate a holistic approach to sustainable living, not just regarding waste and recycling. This would include incentivising a healthy lifestyle through fitness and diet, reduction in carbon through the increased use of public transport, reduction in energy consumption and so on.

These aspects would not be available initially but introduced once a local scheme has fully “bedded in”. This is an intended policy for two important reasons:

  1. The funding for scheme implementation comes initially from the cost savings that can be attained through a reduction in waste and increase in recycling and as such, it is critical that we focus on this aspect as a priority.
  2. In the introduction of new elements over time keeps the concept “alive” in the minds of households and conveys as sense on continual development.

Manifestation of actions into rewards

Recycling: Rewards are assigned to a household/community based upon the level of recycling they achieve. The level of reward value will be agreed with the council and be based upon the monetary value of specific performances.

Waste minimisation: This is measured and rewarded over a set period of time. For example, households could receive additional rewards around Christmas time in relation to the level of minimisation achieved over the year. As with recycling, the level of reward will be agreed with the council and based upon the reduction in landfill costs as a result of performance.

Delivery of rewards
All homes and communities in the defined areas will, by default, have access to the Local Green Points rewards scheme. All homes will receive literature explaining how they can take part and the only thing they have to do is to activate their account. This is done by one of two means.

Online: This method will be pushed as the preferred method. Households will be directed to the Local Green Points website where they enter in their unique code contained within the literature. This opens their page on the site and are then prompted to enter in specific information. Once complete, a button marked “Activate” is pushed and their account is then live.

Offline: For homes not online, the same system applies but uses a form contained in the literature, which is posted back to us.

Once activated, homes will be sent their bespoke stickers, tags and ID Chips installed.

Performance is then measured and at the end of each month, a statement is sent (email or hard copy) containing a summary of their performance and the rewards they have earned. Households receive “Green Points” and they retain the freedom to choose how those points are redeemed. Likely options can include:

  • Purchase of Green Reward products (eco-goods)
  • Cash-value vouchers for approved products and services
  • Access to council facilities (swimming, gyms, etc)
  • Discount coupons

For community rewards, the monetary value of performance will be assigned to community projects.
